Artist Selection
At the core of Shifting Studios is a deeply considered selection process, one that values both artistic integrity and community connection. Our goal is to curate meaningful pairings between artists and spaces that spark creativity, visibility, and dialogue.
We look for artists whose work is original and dynamic —but also for those who truly need the space to grow, create, and be seen. Many of our participants lack access to dedicated studios, and these temporary studios offer not just walls to work within, but room to expand their practice and visibility.
We begin by inviting artists to share their portfolios, statements, and spatial preferences through our submission section below. Submissions are reviewed by our team, often in collaboration with property partners, to identify artists whose practices align with the spirit of the project and the specific qualities of each site.
We look for:
Distinct artistic voice and vision — originality, curiosity, and conceptual depth.
Engagement mindset — artists who welcome interaction and see value in being part of a broader civic or social dialogue.
Diversity of experience — emerging, mid-career, and established artists across disciplines, representing a range of perspectives and backgrounds.
Each placement is approached with a curatorial lens, balancing the needs of the artist’s practice with the specifics of the site. Some artists bring quiet introspection to their spaces; others transform them into energetic studios that invite public participation. Every match is unique — and that’s what gives Shifting Studios its vitality.
