Our Story
We are a collaboration of San Francisco visual artists, curators, and real estate developers who see our city’s stock of vacant commercial real estate as our moment to emerge as a revitalizing force in arts and culture. Our goal is to facilitate the process. We match property owners with artists and breathe life into unused space downtown, converting them into temporary and free studios or venues. In turn, property owners have a tax deductible opportunity and gain increased foot traffic while they seek permanent tenants, and we support and attract talent to this region’s growing artistic zeitgeist.
Shift Method Studio is solely operated by visual artist Margaret Wingard. Based in San Francisco for 10+ years, she uses her background in architecture, design, construction, and permitting to make large-scale conceptual art for both public and private art commissions. Founded in the Bay Area in 2020, Tableau Gray is a boutique art consultancy that marries art with architecture to enhance built environments through targeted placemaking, primarily focused on supporting local artists. Whether it’s a mixed-use development or private residence, we ensure art complements its environment and enhances the brand narrative.
Margaret Wingard lectures on Art in Architecture to the Presidio Bay Foundation Scholarship students and has sat on their jury for selecting awardees. She recently has become an art consultant to connect first-time collectors with the rising Bay Area talent. Tableau Gray’s audiences include mostly Bay Area artists, local building owners with vacant space, building owners with art budgets for curation, general contractors, a restaurant team seeking art curation, interior designers and architects as partners in development projects, San Francisco 1% for Art program team, as well as the Presidio Bay Scholarship Program student cohorts as the art co-lead.

Tableau Gray managed ~$1.5M in projects which commissioned 170+ artworks from 40+ artists. Connected and facilitated the above mentioned parties for vacancy space activation. Currently curating for a high-end restaurant, early planning for a new commercial development project and expanding into private collections.
Margaret Wingard received 10 months free studio space in a vacant FiDi Walgreens before the building was demolished. Since going self-employed in 2021, she has proposed over $1.8M in public art, completing commissions for a 60 ft. suspended sculptural installation, 25 ft. mural, and 9 large paintings within the last 13 months.
